Manager
skills workshops
These workshops are intended as a natural follow-on to the various manager
skills courses, and draw on the experiences gained during and following that
course. It will help to relate these to your current needs.
They give practical guidance to projects in which you are currently involved,
or will shortly be involved. You will be encouraged to outline your particular
needs at the very start of the workshop sessions, and will be presented with a
possible plan of action, for discussion.
Workshop sessions themselves will enable you to work on the agreed materials,
under the guidance of your course tutor, and you may find our consultancy
services to be a useful complement to these workshops.
Because of the emphasis on your own requirements, there should be no more
than five managers on any one course, which will more often be carried out
in-house.
Examples
of projects for consideration:
[Computer projects] [Training
projects] [Accounting projects]
Computer
projects
- You need to objectively evaluate the potential
supplier of new (or additional) computer equipment, and need a firm basis
upon which to base your buying decision.
- You have limited time available to check on the
progress of a new computer system, in its early months of operation. You
need to identify the controls which would be the most cost effective.
- You know that your staff need to be trained on some
aspects of a system, but you want to tailor the material as far as possible
to their individual requirements.
- You recognise that your computer skills will be more
easily improved if you can type competently. You wish to quickly gain from
this.
- You have a specification in outline, but want to
ensure that you write into it the detail which will reduce the likelihood of
misunderstandings from your potential suppliers.
Training
projects
- You will be doing a number of training sessions to
just one or two people. You want to ensure that you allow the training to be
successful in the minimum of time.
- You appreciate that there is not enough time to
produce the "ideal" training course, and are looking to plan the
best training strategy which will result in the greatest success in
achieving the training objectives.
- You are to set up a room for a variety of different
types of training session. You want, within your budget, to provide the
maximum benefits.
- You have to ensure that a training "user
guide" is produced. Its outline, content, style, presentation, and
"language" have yet to be decided.
- You are planning to recruit a full-time trainer. You
would like to be able to give your human resources department some guidance
on selection.
Accounting
projects
- You have to prepare a summary of company (or
departmental) activity that will be discussed with your own staff on a
regular basis. You want to make it simple, but achieve certain objectives of
understanding and motivation.
- You need to produce summary activity figures for
your management meeting. They need to focus on the key items in your
control.
- You have to look back over several years' revenue
figures, and will need to make realistic comments and recommendations.
- You have to compare alternative methods of financing
some capital equipment (photocopier, computer, etc.), before presenting your
recommendations.
- You need to objectively consider the strengths and
weaknesses of a number of alternative computer packages, and to see how each
matches your accounting requirements, before making a buying decision.
